4 Whiteboard Marker Tips and Tricks

20th Jan 2024

Do you have a whiteboard at the office? How do you use them? Some use whiteboards to scribble a few notes, collaborate, or teach. Some use them to draw and visualize ideas.

However you utilize whiteboards, you can make the most out of them with these four tips and tricks:

1. Use Fresh Whiteboard Markers

Whether you’re writing words or drawing, using fresh whiteboard markers is important. They have a direct impact on your text or drawing. Old markers are hard to use and can hardly be seen.

So, before starting a large-scale drawing or writing session, test your markers on a small corner of the whiteboard. Ensure the colors are vibrant, the ink flows smoothly, and the markers are easily erasable. Testing also helps you identify mismatched colors before committing to your main drawing.

2. Experiment with Line Thickness

Whiteboard markers often come in different tip sizes to give you the freedom to experiment with various effects using line thickness.

Use broad strokes for headings, borders, or attention-grabbing elements. Switch to finer lines for details or smaller text. Playing with line thickness adds versatility and depth to your whiteboard drawings.

3. To Get The Marker’s Full Color, Take It Slow

If there’s a large area to cover, it’s tempting to fill it up quickly. But we don’t recommend this if you’re using a whiteboard marker. That’s because the ink won’t be able to keep up, so you end up with a very thin color—like it’s erasing itself as you go.

To prevent this, go a little slower so the ink can keep up. Be more deliberate to get the ink’s full, vibrant color.

4. Let The Ink Dry Before Wiping Mistakes

Let’s say you made a mistake and want to erase it. You sure can, but make sure to let the ink dry before wiping it out. If you attempt to erase the ink too quickly before the ink has had a chance to evaporate, you’ll end up with a “messy” spot.

While whiteboard markers are advertised as dry-wipe, it’s crucial to allow them a few seconds to dry before attempting to wipe them away. The drying time may differ from one manufacturer to another. As a rule of thumb, we recommend counting to three before wiping. In most cases, this approach works effectively.
