How to Make Glitter Pens

09th Mar 2023

Glitter pens add a unique sparkle to artwork, hand lettering, and other crafting projects. Not only that, but they make wonderful gifts for friends and family as well.

Glitter pens come with a range of tip types and finishes. Many are smear-resistant, featuring archival ink to protect your work from fading over time.

Metallic and glitter pens are ideal for adding some flair to your artwork or notes. They’re easy to control, lay down marks with ease, and feature archival ink so your work will last.

  • Preparation

Glitter pens are an inexpensive and cheerful way to spruce up disposable writing instruments. Not only that, but they make great gifts for friends and family as well.

Preparing your pens for glitter is a relatively straightforward task that only needs some basic materials. Begin by lightly sanding each pen’s barrel.

After sanding, remove any branding or writing from the barrel and cap (if applicable). Doing this will help double-sided tape adhere better to the pen.

Once your pens are ready, it’s time to add some glitter! For best results, use ultra-fine glitter.

Avoid any clogs at the bottom of your pen by purchasing colored glitters. Just be careful with the glue as it might bleed through to other components; if this occurs, simply spray with clear varnish for a glossy finish and improved glitter adhesion.

  • Glitter

Glitter is a decorative powder composed of very fine flakes of glass, stone, paper, or plastic. While polyester is the most commonly used material in modern production processes, a coated paper can also be processed to create glitter.

Non-toxic and generally safe for craft projects involving young children; however, it can be hazardous when splattered on clothing or other surfaces.

Store-bought glitter is typically composed of synthetic materials that are non-biodegradable and may take hundreds or even thousands of years to break down.

Thankfully, new technologies are being created that can create glitter from wood pulp with far less energy and environmental harm.

  • Mod Podge

Mod Podge has become a go-to product for decoupage and other crafting projects. It’s an all-in-one glue, sealant, and finish that works on various materials like plastic, ceramic, glass, metal, and terracotta.

This product is user-friendly and easily found in stores at an affordable price. There are various formulas to choose from, so make sure to find one that works for your project.

  • Epoxy

Epoxy is a synthetic polymer that comes in both viscous and hardened forms. It’s widely used in the manufacturing industry for various tasks, such as the construction of furniture or other items.

It is an ideal adhesive, capable of bonding a variety of materials together securely. Furthermore, it has strong waterproof properties and the capacity to withstand chemicals.

This process can be time-consuming, so make sure all materials needed for this step are on hand. Doing so will prevent you from having to mix another batch of resin later on.
